Help: Leukemia
My girlfriend of 4 years was recently diagnosed with leukemia
I have done some research on the topic and i understand how it works
i have been on this site for years so i know the majority of people here are mature and well educated which is why i am reaching out to this
community
does anyone have any personal experiences with friends or relatives that are dealing with or have dealt with this cancer and is willing to share it
with me?
i love her very much and im devastated right now that i am unable to help her because we have a long distance relationship.
i have no idea what to do

As I know, bone marrow transplant is the only solution as for today's medical knowledge, and finding the right marrow sample could be a long process.
Usually there is a bigger chance from family members, if not, you can consult your country's blood bank (or marrow bank) for information.
Sorry I can't provide much information since this is all I know on the matter, but I wish your girlfriend and you good luck, and hope she gets
healthy as soon as possible, please be strong, it's a critical time and your girlfriend will need you very much now.
GOOD LUCK and may God bless you both!

Sorry to hear that, I feel your pain man. Unfortunately, I never had the experience of knowing someone with that disease. But I think my mom knows
someone that works in an organization that help people look for bone marrow transplant. If you need that I guess I can ask my mom about it.

ouch that really sucks honestly...my uncle was diagnosed a year or so ago.
The whhole family went to be tested to see if we had the right bone marrow...usually it's a brother or sister...in my uncles case it was his
brother.
Although there was the transplant my uncle is still having lots of different problems...probably coz he is super stubborn and won't listen...
But yea...bone marrow is probably the only way

Do you know the type of leukemia? Certain ones, like chronic myeloid leukemia can be treated (although not cured) with drugs (imatinib) that target
the factor that stimulate cancer growth.
But no matter what, give her all the support you can, best of luck.

First of all, best of hope for her and my support to both of you..
Second.. lots of false info going around in this topic. Bone marrow transplant is not the only way, and in fact may not be the primary treatment for
this, depending on the type of leukemia. It will most likely be chemotherapy. You can probably find a lot of info online, but make sure you look up
the right kind of leukemia, cause there's different kinds, myelogenous, lymphocytic, chronic, accute... and the prognosis and treatments are very
different (also very different for children vs adults).
Good news is, with the latest advancements in treatments, complete remission is highly foreseeable.
I have no direct experience, but I would say the first thing to do is to familiarize yourself with the cancer so you can rationalize the situation,
and you seem to be doing just that. The more you know, the more you can prepare yourself for what's ahead (the treatments), and the better you can
support her through this.

hey man best of luck to your gf.
my sister had a coworker who was disagnosed with leukemia only 4 or 5 weeks ago. she went to the hospital and they gave her a blood transfusion to
slow it down temporarily, but sadly she passed away in 2 weeks. we were all surprised by how fast the leukemia acted, i hope that your gf doesn't
have the same kind.
a little depressing i know but its leukemia related. best wishes.

I suggest you speak with a real doctor. We can only give you "suggestions". Many people are talking about bone marrow transplants. However,
complications can occur afterwards even with the transplant. How old is your gf? From the cancer classes I have taken, leukemia at a younger age has a
higher chance of survival, while at a higher age, chances get slimmer. Speak with your doctor. I know this is going to be rough times, but hang in
there man. My grandfather recently had a major stroke on Friday. Family is going on a roller coaster, but hopefully he'll stay strong and push on.
Take care

you can try doing bone marrow drives to increase the possible donors. my friends helped set up http://projectmichelle.com/ in a few weeks in houston we increased the possible donor count by almost a thousand. it's hard
cause i think asians make up the smallest group of possible donors so, maybe this helps and you can find one for your gf. we're all here for you.

on a depressing note
remember that girl who needed bone marrow transplant? the one that is chinese and we've seen her in the news all over Toronto (age around 20-25
ish?)
the other day, 2 days ago, i read in the paper, i saw that she passed away after battling it for a while.. apparently, some of my friends went to the
same church as her and was promoting by asking ppl to get tested... however, she couldnt survive...
of course im sure she has a doctor taking care of her atm, but ur support is as important..
if possible (since ur longD) try to get to see her i recommend, ur presence will just all of her (and her cancer cells) feel better for sure =)

Bone marrow transplant, hmm.. good luck on that. It's a very difficult and a lengthy process. There are also many people in line and they treat the
"worst" patient first. Just pray to god that someone won't be ahead of you.
Anyways like all other cancers, if there is a will, there is a way. A good way to start is to inform yourself. So when something critical does occurs,
you won't be left clueless.
This also reminds me of the Haru-Haru video.. don't ask why, but I hope your story doesn't end like the MV's.
Don't stress over it too much because chances are high that she'll break through. There are no cure yet, but there are many types of treatments, so
best of luck.
And don't let her see your personality change because of her cancer. The mind can be very powerful when it comes to curing stress, diseases, etc, OR
the other way around.

yeah, as QQ said, think you should try and be by her side if you really love her. I've had a similar experience with my g/f. And your physical
presence there is just as important and helpful as your spiritual presence.
It's going to be very, VERY tough, but wish you and your girlfriend the best.
You might be drained spiritually because it's really hard, but have faith.
