i haven't installed codecs for a long time on my windows machines...
i've been using VLC player and it plays everything.

Cant say anything about the other programs but I have been using VLC player for at least 7 years and I've never had problems playing anything. Never
had to manually download any codecs, just hit the update button when it asks me to and I'm good to go

I use VLC for everything other than 10bit files.
for 10 bit video files I use Media Player Classic
I stopped messing with codecs as sometimes it just works perfectly, but sometimes it becomes incompatible or screws up something else
